How to tell if the online publication you are looking at is high quality
- Is the author's name given? Is there a link to more information about them such as their qualifications, background and specialist topics?
- Are there ads? Are they flashy and distracting or are they contained and don't detract from the content?
- Is the page layout neat and well organised or is it cluttered and confusing?
- Is it well-written? Look for typos and grammatical errors, but also the level of sophistication of the writing.
This isn't an exact science, and it comes with experience. But in the era of 'fake news' it's a very important skill to develop.
A comparison of different online publications
Daily Mail
- Lots of ads
- Because the ads take up so much room you need to scroll to see author's name and date of article
- Long headline that uses emotional language
- Spelling error in the headline
- Dot point summary after the headline, which encourages you to click away without even reading the full article
The Guardian
- A few ads, but they're kept clear of the article
- Can see the author's name, and the date of the article
- There's a picture that's related to the content of the article
- Despite some of the masks having an offensive image, the headline and summary don't sensationalise it
The New Yorker
- Ads at the top and side, but well clear of the article
- Plenty of white space, uncluttered layout
- A simple headline and summary
- The author and date are clear
- The image relates to the article
The Atlantic
- Only one ad
- Simple heading and succinct summary
- Author and date visible
- Picture relates to the article
- Uncluttered layout and plenty of white space
