Why researching for art online is tricky
The creative subjects are the hardest subjects to research online because in-depth, credible resources are hard to find. These are some of the most common problems, and some solutions.
The creative subjects are the hardest subjects to research online because in-depth, credible resources are hard to find. These are some of the most common problems, and some solutions.
The only information you can find online is brief news articles and information about exhibitions.
Solution: Use books or journal articles to find more in-depth information. As well as the State Library's databases you can try Google Scholar and Google Books. When you're using Google Scholar, uncheck the patents and citations boxes (in the menu on the left of the results). If you're mostly getting results that you need to pay to access, add filetype:pdf OR filetype:html at the end of your search. If you're getting a lot of books in your Scholar results and don't want to, add -book to your search. |
You've looked for books and journal articles and information online and you can't find anything with the depth or amount of information you need.
Solution: Use a wide range of sources and cherry pick all the small bits of analysis and information in each source. If you are looking for information on a particular artwork, research the artist as well. Finding out about their life and context and their other artworks will help you form a more complete research picture of the artwork you are focusing on. |
You're not sure whether the resources you've found are credible.
Solution: This is a big problem when researching for art. If you are using books or journal articles you found in the State Library databases, these are credible sources. But you may also need to use pages from blogs or online magazines and these aren't always credible, so learn how to analyse a website to decide if it is trustworthy. |
