A better search engine... Sweetsearch is a search engine designed for students and is designed to give you more relevant results for schoolwork than Google will. Be aware that the results it returns are very American-focussed, so if you specifically need Australian results add inurl:au to the end of your search. |
Academic articles
The State Library of NSW has online databases where you can find scholarly articles. If you are a member of your local library you can register your card to give you access to the State Library's eResources. (That link will take you straight to the Economics databases). We have a guide on using the State Library's databases and a guide on using academic articles. Read the graphic further down the page for how to search a database. Google Scholar is another source of academic articles, but it can be hard to find freely available articles. Adding filetype:pdf OR filetype:html to the end of your search and unchecking the 'include patents' and 'include citations' boxes on the left can help with this. If your search results are full of books, add -book to your search. |
News articles
Look for articles from publications with quality, in-depth journalism.
We recommend these news outlets:
Free
ABC News
The Guardian Australia
The Conversation - Articles written by academics in a journalistic style.
Ross Gittins' columns
BBC World Business Report
Require a subscription
Sydney Morning Herald - There is a limit to the number of free articles you can view per month.
Bloomberg - You can view one free article per month
Australian Financial Review - Requires a subscription
The Economist - Requires a subscription
If you want to search more than one news outlet at once, use Google News. You can use the filters on the left to limit the search to Australia, and you can click the tiny arrow at the right-hand end of the search box to use the advanced search, which lets you limit the search to recent articles, or specify words that you don't want appearing in your search results (use this to remove irrelevant results).
You can use these State Library databases to find older articles (see the information above on how to log in):
